Textiles Wastage is....
NOT COOL!
What is Textiles Wastage?
Textiles wastage is when fabric or clothing is no longer needed and is thrown out.
The Stats and Facts
Australia is the world’s biggest consumer of textiles, more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing end up in landfill each year, the equivalent weight of almost four Sydney Harbour Bridges (Australian Institute, 2024). It’s been found 92 million tonnes of textiles wastage is produced every year as production doubled from 2005 to 2015. 11% of plastic waste comes from textiles wastage and 10% of global carbon emissions . The junked fabrics then get filled in poor countries where the fabric is burned or dumped in landfills because of the lack of infrastructure (UNEP, 2025). The environment is severely impacted as toxic greenhouse gasses are released and trapped: the main driver of climate change.
